Marketing of education

Sir,—The suggestion of Ng Seow Kong (November 23), that the New Zealand Government would be exploiting Malaysian students if they charged them a Ifee for studying here is nonsense. My Observations of Malaysian students are that they generally come' from middle-income families, certainly not from be.s low the poverty line, as Seow ' Kong suggests. The students tend • to study for professional degrees such as commerce, law 'and engineering. Unfortunately, many Malaysians are not- interested in degrees in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. On graduation they return to < Malaysia, live in the cities, make lots of money, and enjoy them- ■; selves. Nothing wrong with that But why should the New Zealand Government subsidise them for doing this? Seow Kong should worry about the current political exploitation of Malaysians by the Malaysian Government and not unjustly accuse the New Zealand Government of exploitation for proposing a fee on overseas students. — Yours, etc., B. J. RANDALL November 25, 1987.
