Dairies, garages new agents for P.O. services

Groceries, dairies, garages, draperies, and a chemist shop will take over mail services when many of Canterbury’s post offices and agencies close on February 5.

New Zealand Post has advertised the new agents in community newspapers this week, and yesterday released the full list for the Canterbury- area except Timaru. Fifty-two alternative services are being proposed, though in one case — at the Christchurch Railway Station — it is only a posting box. For many of the city post offices that will be closed, nearby outlets will sell stamps, but in the country areas there will be “postal delivery centres” usually at a local store.

The centres will sell stamps, weigh and price mail including packets and parcels,' and will have provision for private boxes and counter mail delivery. They will also receive mail.
