Sir,—We have had several letters of complaint about the closing of country post offices and not many very satisfactory answers. I would"like to ask the

regional general manager how New Zealand Post arrived at the figure of 3110,000 as a subsidy on the running of the Hororata Post Office. We have had a postmistress and a part-time assistant Does this figure include the $30,000 to 340,000 spent a few months ago to alter our quite adequate post office into a glorified glasshouse? The Hororata district would be interested to know just what these unnecessary alterations cost — Yours, etc.,

A. D. OLIVER. November 3, 1987.

[The district manager of New Zealand Post Mr P. J. Nicholas, replies: “The subsidy figure quoted by A, D. Oliver represents the actual cost of running the subsidised office. The figure represents the 'total cost of running that office (including overheads) in the 1986-87 year. The alterations to Hororata Post Office were undertaken by the old Post Office for security reasons and are transitional costs, which must be borne when a change is made.”]
