New Regent Street

Sir,—The proposal to enclose New Regent Street in glass Is going from the ridiculous to the sublime. The ridiculous being the attempt to preserve the Clarendon Hotel facade. That “preservation” attempt may yet succeed if the wall was covered by some sort of vine, creating a latter-day Babylonian hanging garden. However, the New Regent Street proposal has nothing to recommend it Among many other things, not only will the "matt” need an air-conditioning system but also a humidifier. The weather of Christchurch does not warrant such excessive and silly gestures. I am not against progress, but obviously the developers have not spent any time in a Christchurch glasshouse during mid-summer. It strikes me that developers should focus on much more innovative and worthy schemes like the tower, underground car park and monorail proposals. Such streets as New Regent Street should become the concern of local and national governments, which should be actively Involved in their survival as a link to our past. — Yours, etc., CHRISTODOULOS E. GL MOISA. November 8, 1987. -•
