Children’s bill input sought
The groups concerned about aspects of the Children and Young Persons Bill may soon have a chance to offer alternative ideas.
A 12-member working party appointed by the Minister of Social Welfare, Dr Cullen, has been asked to specify shortcomings in the legislation.
Two Christchurch members are in the working party. They are Mr Doug Bailey, of the Social Welfare Department’s southern regional office, and Mr John Dunlop, who is deputy principal at the Kingslea Centre.
Mr Bailey said the party was trying to get in touch with as many groups as possible that had expressed concern about the bill.
The party’s aim was to study the contentious parts of the bill and to examine how best those concerns could be met It was now hoping to receive feedback.
The working party is made up of Maori and Pacific Island social workers plus other Social Welfare Department and Justice Department and Parliamentary legal drafting service representatives.
