Natural contraception methods defended

A Nelson Natural Family Planning teacher, Ms Judy Crowe, has disputed suggestions that N.F.P. is an ineffective form of contraception. The assertions were made last week by Ms Marie Clinton, of the Parkview Abortion Clinic in Wellington, who said more women were seeking abortions after natural and barrier methpds — to which they had changed from intra-uterine devices — had failed.

Ms Crowe said natural methods were just as effective as any other if used correctly, and taught by an accredited teacher of the Natural Family Planning Association. She quoted recent Consumers’ Institute figures which gave N.F.P. methods a failure rate of less than 5 per cent This compares with Ms Clinton’s assertion of a 10 per cent failure rate. Ms Crowe said the women referred to by Ms Clinton had been using the rhythm or calendar method rather than methods based on body temperature and cervical mucus recordings, advocated by the association.
