Zambia detains missionaries

NZPA-Reuter Lusaka Zambian authorities are holding four British missionaries who entered the country from Zimbabwe earlier this month, the British High Commission said. A British spokesman said Peter Hammond, Lewis John Pocock, Robert William Brown, and Christopher Lyndon were detained at a security road block on October 7 after entering Zambia by car at the border town of Livingstone on their way to Malawi. No charges had been made against the four men, held in Lusaka under Zambia’s strict

security laws. Zambian security officials were not immediately available for comment. The spokesman said the four, headed by Hammond who was a leader of the Frontline Fellowship Mission based in Cape Town, South Africa, were carrying bibles and missionary supplies. The police found army surplus equipment such as water bottles and belts in their car, with cameras and video equipment, he said. British consular officials in Lusaka visited the four, who were being well-treated, the spokesman said.
