Award may be settled today

The Canterbury, Rubber Workers’ Union hopes to settle its award today, says the secretary, Mr Roger Brott.' Mr Brott said last evening that the union expected no problem with the employers’ wage offer of 7 per cent. He said the union traditionally took parity with the Metal Trades Award which had settled at that figure. But he said employers seemed reluctant to acknowledge the need to have bonus and other payment agreements included in the award. If the award did not include these payments, which make up a considerable amount of the

weekly wage packet, the payments would not be enforceable. “The union wants those payments recognised,” he said. 1 If the assessors do not settle the issue today the union will , meet workers next week to decide what action to take. The Wellington union, with which the Canterbury group has amalgamated, will meet later this week for award talks. Both unions have about 550 members and their talks are likely to be held together next year. He said that by necessity the wage claim was not a high one.
