Singapore flights sought

New Zealand was losing valuable tourist revenue because there were too few direct flights from Singapore to Christchurch, said a Christchurch City councillor last evening. The chairman of the council’s airport committee, Cr Morgan Fahey, said that the Singapore to Christchurch air race, part of Christchurch Airport’s jubilee celebrations, was largely responsible for the increased interest in Christchurch in Singapore. Unless more “seat capacity” was available, potential revenue from tourism would continue to be lost, he said.

Singapore residents now spent more than Americans in New Zealand and were second only to the Japanese, with an average spending of $2109, excluding air fares. A Singapore Airlines flight to Christchurch carried between 18,000 kg and 20,000 kg in freight, frequently leaving behind as much again. Cr Fahey called for support for an extra direct flight to Christchurch. The council decided to seek urgent Government support for increased services from Singapore and Christchurch.
