Train plunges off bridge

NZPA-AP London A passenger train plunged off a bridge washed away by torrential rain in western Wales yesterday and four people were missing, authorities said. Royal Navy divers were flown in to search one of the train’s three coaches, which sank into the swollen River Tywi near Cardigan,, about 300 km west of London. Three passengers and the driver were missing, British Rail said. Two passengers and three railroad employees were rescued. The driver of the early-morning train

from Swansea to Shrewsbury failed to spot disaster ahead because the rails were still intact even though the bridge had collapsed, British Rail said. The heavy rain in western Wales — more than scm of rainfall was recorded during the week-end — came on top of a storm that blasted London and southern England before dawn last Friday, causing 15 deaths. Thousands of homes remained blacked out and workers were still struggling to clear roads that were washed away or blocked by fallen trees. Nearly 250,000 homes were without electricity.
