C.H.O.G.M. talks
Sir,—Predictably, the main subject of discussion at the C.H.O.G.M. conference will be a session on South. Africa, not even a Commonwealth country. Already, almost every media report illustrates this obsession, particularly noticeable of countries which have' a' very poor record of human rights. How often does ' one hear criticism from the organisation of Soviet aggression in Afghanistan, or of wholesale murder by starvation
in Ethiopia? These are just twoof the many that could be given. How likely is it that Messrs Lange, Hawke or Mulroney will criticise Zimbabwe for its .atrocities perpetrated against the Matabele? The British Commonwealth, once a very worthwhile organisation, has deteriorated largely because of the addition of black-ruled countries which have become republics, some even Marxist, one-party States, with principle allegiance given to Moscow. These countries are members of the Commonwealth only for what they can get out of the association, not what they can give to it — Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. October 14, 1987.
