March to herald police open day
The Christchurch police will march through inner-city streets on Friday to publicise the first public open day at the Central Police Station in eight years. The open day, to run on Sunday from 1# a.m. to 4 p.m n will give the public an opportunity to view nine floors of the station, including cells and operational areas.
“We are for ever asking the public for help in various circumstances. This is one small way in which we can thank them,” said the police community relations coordinator, Inspector Mai Griebel.
The public will be al-, lowed into the control room, cells, police museum and the police club.
Static displays will be set up throughout the station and a block of Hereford Street will be closed for displays by the Fire Service, ambulance and an amateur radio group. Police dogs and the Christchurch Police Band will give displays in the station yard.
A search and rescue display will include abseiling. Friday’s promotional march will begin outside the station in Hereford Street at 12.30 p.m. The police dog section will lead the march followed by the band and a flag bearer on horseback. The march will turn from Hereford Street Into Colombo Street and head into Cathedral Square where the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and senior police officers will be given a salute. The parade will then continue north on Colombo Street and turn left into Gloucester Street, left into Oxford Terrace and right into Hereford Street to return to the police station; Public access 'to the station on Sunday will be through the Cambridge Terrace entrance.
