Maori Affairs handling marae creditors
By JANE ENGLAND, Maori affairs reporter Creditors claiming debts owed by the National Nga Hau E Wha marae are being referred to the Maori Affairs Department in Christchurch. The marae board of trustees headed by its chairman, Mr Waha Stirling, has enlisted the department’s help to clarify and amend its debt position. The deputy secretary of
the department’s head office in Wellington, Mr Neville Baker, said that the department would appoint an officer, probably an accountant employed on contract, for the Mr Stirling said that the board would make appropriate arrangements to satisfy all creditors. This will also help in finalising the audits required by the board. The suspended secretary of
the board, Mr Hori Brennan, has refused to hand over necessary information which would help the board. Mr Brennan has remained at the marae, with his family and supporters. As long as that situation existed little could be achieved to complete the project and reestablish Access training programmes which had been transferred from the marae, Mr Stirling said.
