Tips for care of baby birds
1 ’ It is the “baby bird season” and a Christchurch woman has put together information about how to care for baby birds if they are in 1 need of help. Mrs Beverley Broad, a co-owner of the Animal Hospital, says she is trying to “take the heat off’ 1 veterinarians and the De : partment of Conservation. Since her Ferry Road clinic opened its doors 24 .' hours a day, seven days a week, “we have been working in conjunction with D.O.C. and are acting as a clearing house for sick and injured birds and, after treatment, passing them on to volunteers to care for,” she said. As well as looking for more volunteers, Mrs Broad is encouraging the public to look after baby birds. n • There are three'golden rules, she says; Make sure the bird really is an or-
phan; remember that It is time-consuming to rear; and have as an objective releasing it as soon as it is ready. Once someone takes on the responsibility of bird care, it should be provided with a nest warmth, a safe room, and food. Information sheets with more details will be available from the Ferry Road Animal Hospital from mid-October.
