New collection system for court fines
The Justice Department has introduced a new fines collection system into the courts. Automatic bank transfer arrangements will now be used throughout the country after a trial programme in the Wellington courts region. The department’s Courts Division has described the system as efficient and popular with court staff and individuals paying fines.
The use of automatic bank transfers was initially used in the Masterton District Court before being extended to the Wellington District Court earlier this year. “People on low incomes benefit the most They don’t have to travel each
week to court to pay instalments, taking time off work to visit the courthouse,” said the assistant secretary for justice, Mr Garth Soper, yesterday. “The regular, automatic payments have reduced counter time. Courts are only open to receive payments between 9.30 a.m. and 4 p.m. — a handicap for those people who are working or live some distance from the court” It was too early to say what effect the new service would have on the backlog of unpaid fines. "We are confident that there will be a positive result in this area. We are expecting an increase in the collection of fines,” Mr Soper said.
