D.S.I.R. has new head in ecology

A new director of the Ecology Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has been appointed. Dr Malcolm Crawley, aged 46, who lectured in zoology at the University of Canterbury from 1969 to 1980, has taken the post. He left the university to become research director of the Wildlife Service. The service was taken into the new Conservation Department in April.

The division he will head does research on New Zealand ecology, concentrating on both native species such as kiwis and the rare giant wetas and on introduced species such as oposums and rabbits.

Dr Crawley said his main priority would be to maintain and enhance the division with a mix of long-term science and more immediate revenueearning work.
