N.Z. Steel taken to Court

Auckland New Zealand Steel, Ltd, is being taken to court next month for allegedly discharging unacceptable amounts of zinc into Manukau Harbour. The Auckland Regional Water Board has laid four charges against the company claiming the Glenbrook steel mill “grossly exceeded” limits on zinc discharges on April 2, 3 and 4. The Water Board said measurements on those three days ranged between 12g and 32g per cu m of discharge — more than the acceptable limit of 1.5 g.

The Water Board did not learn about the incident until New Zealand Steel filed its monthly monitoring report a month after the spillage happened. A spokesman for the company said the high zinc loadings occurred when water overflowed from the kiln scrubber clarifier circuit. A preliminary hearing will be held on November lO at the District Court at Pukekohe.
