Quax resigns from coaching job

PA Auckland Dick Quax has resigned from his New Zealand middle-distance and distance running coaching position. The former world 5000 m record-holder and 1976 Olympic 5000 m sliver medallist is now the marketing and promotions manager for the Avondale Jockey Club. Quax said that his main reason for resigning his national coaching position

was pressure of work. But he said that he was not entirely happy with the way New Zealand athletics was heading. Quax was one of four middle distance and distance running coaches working very much voluntarily for the New Zealand Athletic Association. The three others are Quax’s fellow Aucklanders, John Davies, Arch Jelley and Jack Ralston. Their responsi-

bilities include running coaching courses for coaches and acting in an advisory capacity for athletes and coaches seeking assistance and information. “New Zealand has coaches as good as any in the world. Arch Jelley and John Davies are examples,” Quax said. “But it is terribly difficult for them to continue to give freely of their time on virtually an amateur basis.”
