Precocious Lad has wide draw to overcome in Matamata Cup

Special correspondent Auckland Precocious Lad has a wide barrier draw to overcome but he could still be one to beat in the Matamata Cup at the Matamata Racing Club’s meeting today. The field for the 1600 m is notable for including the proven stayers, Threesome, Sounds Like Fun and Cure, good gallopers certainly but a fair way short of their best distance. , All three, besides, are at early stages of their preparations for bigger ~and longer races of the summer. Precocious Lad has also shown himself able to stay well and he is right up to running a solid 1600 m in the best company. What is more he has had a couple of races, since coming back from a winter layoff. Threesome, Cure and Sounds Like Fun have had one race each and could be expected to need more, though they will undoubtedly attract much interest. A four-year-old, Precocious Lad ended last season by nearly winning the 2000 m Joseph Kutze .Championship Stakes at Avondale. Cure and in front of Sounds Like Fun (third) and Tri Belle (fourth). A little earlier he showed his quality when pressing Abit Leica very close in the Weight-For-Age 2000 metres Cambridge Stud International at Te Rapa. Precocious Lad came back to racing with an eye-catching fifth over 1300 m at Tauranga on September 19. He was not as good at Te Rapa meanwhile, over 1600 m but such a failure, second time up after a spell, is not unusual. Chief Commander has considerable ability, although this will be his second race after a winter spell. First time back he ran on well for third behind Sir Gerald and Rationale over 1300 m at Tauranga on September 19. Sounds Like Fun finished ninth in that race; but not far away, and Cure was thirteenth. Biltmore is another interesting runner.
