Motor-cyclist ‘inattentive’
A senior constable told the Court he believed the cause of an accident in which a youth, aged 18, died, was inattention. Timothy Yates died on July 5, 1987, from multiple injuries sustained when his motor-cycle collided with a car, the Coroner found. ' Senior Constable Martin Richard Fitzsimons said that on Saturday, June 20, at 12.15 a.m the Ministry of Tansport attended an accident involving a car and a motor-cycle at the intersection of Clyde Road and Creyke Road.
He said the motorcyclist, suffered severe head and right leg injuries. He never regained
consciousness. He said enquiries showed Yates had spent the evening of June 19 with friends and attended a function at the university, returning to the friends’ place. On leaving, he had ridden along Creyke Road, overtook a car, and collided with another car as he entered a roundabout.
A witness from the car, which had been overtaken, and who had also been at the address, said she did not think Yates had been intoxicated that evening and that his speed when he had passed, them had not been excessive.
