Inventor opposes fire ban

An open fire does not cause pollution if a special grid is used over the fire, says a Canterbury man who has patented his invention.

Mr Albert Lover, of Highbank, is opposed to the open fire ban proposed by the Christchurch City Council.

Mr Lover said that enclosed burners caused more pollution than open fires used with his inveqtion, called the Berjan fire grid.

The grid, which has been on sale in Christchurch for some years, sits over the open grate, and causes the fire to burn more cleanly and efficiently. Mr Lover said that an independent scientific test showed that the grid increased heat output more than 10 per cent. The grid has not been officially tested to see if it lessens pollution. The district air pollution scientist with the Health Department, Dr Terry Brady, said that test facilities were not available in New Zealand.

Tests run by the department would normally cost the applicant about $2OOO. Dr Brady said that indications were that the grid would marginally reduce pollution from the open fire.
