‘Big is beautiful’ in wood
Large can be beautiful, according to Christchurch woodturner, Mary Bartos. After 12 years, Mary Bartos’ artistic repertoire is expanding to Include larger works — platters, bowls and containers in hard and soft woods ranging from cedar to walnut and elm.
“I always wanted to ; produce larger works. But ' these also involve high outlay and greater demands on the artist. But " after 12 years I decided to take the step.”
She sees the works as becoming more than practical pieces. In some cases, they become focal points and decoration — especially in the case of a cedar dish with its highly figured network of graining. “I also have a theory that overseas visitors appreciate the large pieces more than New Zealanders,” she added. The woodturner is at present exhibiting her work at the Woodcraft Gallery in the Arts Centre. The exhibition will continue until September 21.
