New frigates

Sir,—lt is 'regrettable at a time when New Zealand has economic problems that we should be pressed into spending SI2OOM on four frigates. I appreciate that the useful life of our old vessels has finished, and replacements are required. Surely it is not necessary for us to extend ourselves 6000 miles into the northern Pacific? This would seem to reinforce the notion that the Soviet Union is our enemy, whereas it is one of our main trading partners. The Soviet base at Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam is but one base, compared with numerous American bases in the Pacific. Should we spend less on defence, and more on combating poverty, homelessness, and violence in our community? Peace at home is surely more desirable than chasing mythical enemies. — Yours, etc., MARGARET BLACKER. September 11, 1987.
