Smoking ban

Sir,—M. Smith and H. Blackley (September 9) are being unrealistic if they believe they could convince every smoker to be “helped” to give up. There will always be those who refuse and, indeed, those who will dig their toes in all the harder. The only answer in places like hospitals is to have areas put aside for smokers so that the rest of the building has clean air and is safer. Smokers will not take kindly to being without their .regular dose for an eight-hour period. Also, I can not see how a smoking room reinforces their addiction, as surely an addiction is self-perpetuating anyway. If one wishes to pursue that argument it would be useful to remember the other influences during the remaining 16 hours of a person’s day which involve such things as glossy cigarette promotions at the local dairy, sports sponsorship by tobacco companies and the psychological ploys of advertisers in the print media. — Yours, etc., ROSE ISDALE.
