No A.P.C.s for Selwyn Street
A.P.C. stands for armoured personnel carriers — right? Correct, but it also stands for automatic public conveniences.
The Christchurch City Council has looked at A.P.C.s for the Selwyn Street shopping 1 centre. Residents have petitioned the council for toilets to be provided at the centre. A.P.C.s are self-con-tained toilet units that automatically clean themselves after use.
The council’s works and traffic committee discounted them as a possibility yesterday, because of their cost. Staff estimated the in-
stallation would cost $140,000, three times the cost >’•. of simple . public toilets. However,, the idea of prefabricated public toilets won committee approval and the city architect will be asked to investigate the design and manufacture of pre-cast toilets. ; ■
