Staff changes to be reported
Changes to staff levels in the City Council’s works and traffic department will be reported to the works and traffic committee each month. The committee decided yesterday it should have that information. It did not believe, however, that it should have final approval for each staff change made. Cr Ron Wright, the committee chairman, wanted the committee to have approval for all sal-
ary and wage worker appointments in the department. . Other councillors felt that would be impractical. The deputy general manager (works), Mr Harold Surtees, and the Town Clerk, Mr John
Gray, also felt that if approval had to go through the committee it would hamstring staff in making daily decisions. “We need flexibility,” Mr Surtees said. Decisions on salaried staff were made by the management executive and decisions on wage workers by overseers and the labour superintendent, he said. Any additions to staffing establishment already came to the committee.
Cr Wright said the committee had to be aware of what was going on in the department. That could be achieved by providing information on changes in staff levels each month, Cr Rex Arbuckle said.
