Professionals scrutinise product

By

DEBORAH McPHERSON

THE ATTENTION of dermatologists in New Zealand and overseas has been aroused by a face moisturiser on the market after 10 years research. Lancome’s “Niosome anti-ageing ‘ system,” as the moisturiser is optimistically called, works by penetrating the skin’s deeper layers with a moisturising compound similar in structure to liposomes to reconstruct the skin.

One of the causes of ageing is the breakdown of the cells in the epidermis. Once the niosomes as they are called, penetrate the skin’s deeper layers they mimic the intercellular structure and help restore and reconstruct damaged areas, which in turn delays the ageing process, reasons Lancome.

Niosome had been warily described by an Auckland dermatologist, as a “highly fascinating cream.”

John Wishart, of Epsom, Auckland, says the moisturiser “certainly seems to have some unique properties, that seem to have a restorative function.” "The face cream seems to have an advanced moisturising compound with a sunscreen, and it certainly has been elegantly prepared. It’s unique, but whether it fulfils all the dreams is another matter,” adds Dr Wishart.

Lancome does not claim that the moisturiser will get rid of wrinkles or previous facial scarring, warns a company representative, Elizabeth Reed. It is a product which can be used at any age, Lancome is happy, however, to let a world renowned and sbmetimes controversial dermatologist, Dr Alber Kligman, of Philadelphia, have the last say on the product. Skin treated with the product shows a "spectacular change,” he is quoted as saying after carrying out independent tests in 1985.

“The effectiveness of Niosome excels any I have encountered up to now.”
