$4500 theft alleged

PA Tauranga . Two Tauranga men were remanded overnight in custody on charges relating to an alleged robbery of the Delta Service Station in Tauranga on Sunday.

Dean Joseph Churchward, aged 22, a forecourt manager at the station, and Harvey Lee, aged 31, a painter, did not plead to the charge of stealing $4500 when they appeared in the District Court at Tauranga yesterday. Sergeant Graeme Troy said a substantial number of other charges were

being laid. He opposed bail. He said Churchward reported that the service station had been robbed, but inquiries revealed this was not the case. Seeking bail, Mr Gerald McArthur ; said Lee needed to explain to his employer what had happened or he would lose his job. Judge David Wilson said he could not grant bail under the conditions of the Violent Offenders Act which came into force on Saturday as the charges were of a serious nature.
