Armed robbery admitted

PA Auckland Two men have admitted the gunpoint hold-up of the Dominion Road branch of the Auckland Savings Bank on Friday evening. In the District Court, at Auckland yesterday, St Mary’s Bay flatmates, Hugh John O’Connor, aged 26, a painter, and Allan Grant McKeown, aged 29, also admitted converting their getaway car. The pair told the police they had used the $18,200 taken in the robbery to “repay debts.” Judge Cadenhead remanded them in custody to the High Court for sentence on August 18. McKeown also faces a

charge of possession of heroin for supply and O’Connor is charged with possession of the drug. They 'were remanded without plea to August 10 on these counts. The police said the pair burst into the bank wearing masks and armed with a rifle and an air pistol at 6.43 p.m. on Friday. They lined 15 customers up against a wall and took cash from four tellers. Spoken to on Saturday evening O’Connor said his cut-down rifle was loaded in case he had to fire a warning shot, the police said. McKeown said his air pistol was also loaded.
