Welcome signs
Five new “Welcome to Paparua County” signs will be erected throughout the county. However, the decision to erect the signs was delayed by some controversy regarding vandalism in the county. The deputy county engineer, Mr P. M. Gallant, said four signs had been erected in the county several years ago, but three had been taken by vandals only weeks after they were erected. Cr J. M. E. Calvert and Cr J. S. M. Kyle voted not
to erect the signs for fear of vandalism. “These signs will be a great advertisement and of great advantage only to vandals who will use them as a target for bottles and rubbish to be hurled at, and who will eventually rip them down,” said Cr Kyle. However, the motion not to erect the signs was lost and the council decided to place them along the West Coast Road, Main South Road, Akaroa Main Road, Sparks Road, and Johns Road.
