SOCCER The final round of the Canterbury women’s soccer league competition was completed on Sunday. A knock-out competition for all divisions will start this Sunday. In the fourth division Riccarton beat Avonhead, 9-2, with Janet Dixon netting a hat-trick, while in the fifth division Riccarton beat Shamrock, 4-0, Morag Jones scoring all the goals. Results were: Division two: Rangers 1, Hornby 1; Imperial 1, University 0; Shamrock 3, Rangiora 0; North Beach-Parklands 4, Burwood 1.

WATER POLO As it expected, the New Zealand women’s water polo team has found the competition tough in the early stages of Its six-week European tour. At the Oslo Cup in Oslo, New Zealand played seven games for six losses and a draw. The draw, 8-8 against Sweden, was a significant result for New Zealand. It was the first time it had had anything other than a loss in a full international. New Zealand’s other results were: v. France, 3-14; v. Belgium, 10-15; v. Canada, 2-20; v. Norway, 6-14; v. U.S.A. B, 4-11; v U.S.A. A, 1-22.

NETBALL Saints kept their unbeaten record intact when they beat Whanau, 49-20, in the men’s Sunday netball league competition at the Hagley courts. Saints and United are the competition leaders. Points: Saints 30, United 28, University Red 22, Whanau 20, Cashmere High School 20, College Old Boys 17, University Blue 15.
