Kirkwood topples chess rival

Kirkwood Intermediate took a significant step towards qualifying for the C grade final of "The Press” schools chess competition for the first time when it beat the other unbeaten zone two team, Chisnaliwood, in the latest round. The previous week Kirkwood had beaten the manytimes intermediate champion, Cobham, 4-2, and it repeated that score against Chisnaliwood. Glen Sadler, on board one for Kirkwood, seemed set to give his team a 5-1 victory when he was a queen up for most of the game against Chris Regan. But Regan produced a timely knight fork to take his opponent’s queen and Sadler conceded.

No side has established a clear break in the top two grades, but Bumside began well in the girls grade, winning all four contests, and the defending champion, Christchurch Girls’, shared the points against St Margaret’s. Those two teams opposed each other in last year’s final, Christchurch Girls’ winning on a count-back after a 2-2 draw.
