Maoris urged to challenge radio
PA Wellington Demonstrations against the Broadcasting Corporation have been urged by the chairman of the Wellington Maori Language Board, Mr Huirangi Waikerepuru. Mr Waikerepuru wants Maori reaction to the corporation’s decision to dismantle a transmitter used for an independent Maori radio station.
He said yesterday that the board’s station, Te Upoko 0 Te Ika, which had broadcast successfully for the two months, had a written guarantee from the Minister of Broadcasting, Mr Hunt, that it could use the transmitter.
“The corporation has cut us off at the knees — without informing the Minister,” Mr Waikerepuru said.
The station wanted to broadcast on the 2kW transmitter, taken from Mount Victoria to Titahi Bay for study by engineers, for most of next year.
“We are calling on Maori people to give whole-hearted support to demonstrate to get our radio station back on air,” he said.
“What has happened to the transmitter has made our position quite clear; we will be stomped into the ground unless we fight back now.”
