Methanol plans dropped

PA Wellington. The Liquid Fuels Trust Board has scrapped plans for a large-scale South Island methanol plant after investigation of three lignite sites. The investigation identified Ashers-Waituna as the cheapest, safest site for mining but found all three not viable against present fuel costs. The board said, however, that the study was based on existing technical, economic, social and environmental conditions. “It 'is Inevitable that thye may change,

sibly resulting in different conclusions,” it said. In that case further studies would be needed. The present study focused on Ashers-Wai-tuna, Benhar in south-east Otago, and Hawkdun in Central Otago. The study found that Ashers-Waituna and Benhar were “indistinguishable” in cost terms but the Benhar costings were more uncertain. In the most-favourable case, methanol could have been produced at $550 a tonne in early 1986, compared with a landed import price of $3OO to $350 a tonne.
