in London The veteran New Zealand golfer, Bob Charles, just failed in a late charge to' win the inaugural Seniors British Open tournament during the week-end. ? ' • The tournament was won by. the British golfer, Neil Coles, aged 52, who has spent the last 32 years on the professional fairways. Although losing . the rain-swept tournament to Coles by one stroke, Charles still picked up almost $50,000 in prizemoney for taking second place.
Coles, who won his first tournament in 1956, won $75,000 in what was the biggest purse of his long professional golfing
But all players had to endure atrocious weather conditions on the Turnburry links. Charles, who won the 1963 British Open, played a superb final round in the. tournament, even though he said afterwards that he was a "fair weather” player. He birdied the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth holes, and was home in 33, having gone out in 34. However, earlier in the tournament, Charles was unable to match Cole’s consistency from tee to green. Coles won the tournament with rounds of 66, 73, 67 and 73, for a total of 280, while Charles scored rounds of 67, 74, 72, and 67, for a total of 285. <
