Yearlings on show at Rangiora

The West Melton horseman, Brian Court, produced the Clever Innocence colt, Innocent Ark, to beat three rivals in the Yearling Parade at the North Canterbury workouts, which were held after the barrier trials at Rangiora yesterday.

The smallest of the four colts, and geldings on display, Innocent Ark settled third but dashed up in the open with 500-metres to run. He found a little extra in the run home to shade the pacemaker, Parvenu (Marjac gelding)

by half a length, with a length to Mac’s Delight (Noodlum—Regal Cheval gelding). Starship’s halfbrother, Star Kingdom (Smooth Fella—Star Nurse colt), ran out from the inside alley at the start, checking the winner before settling last in a gap of a few lengths.

Star Kingdom, which has a similar action to Starship, was going as well as anything at the finish after being timed over his last 800 m in 1:3.5 and 400 m in 30.45.

Innocent Ark recorded 1:46.3 for the 1400 metres (stand), the leaders being timed over their last 800 m in 1:4.3 and their closing in 30.85. Innocent Ark is the first foal from the Garrison Hanover mare, Joan of Arc, an unraced half-sis-ter to Golden Rolex from the same family as Repentant Leisure and' Happy Ending. “He’ll probably make a two-year-old — he’s small and compact,” said Court.

“Joan of Arc was not a bad mare. I trained on

lease from Lloyd Wigzell. She qualified well and looked extra good but developed splint problems and kept going sore." Court intends giving Innocent Ark a let-up after yesterday’s run and will get him going again for the first South Island two-year-old race of the season at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November.

A client of the Court stable bought Innocent Ark’s dam outright from Mr Wigzell last week.
