Echoes of criticism and broken glass

Members of the Canterbury Jockey Club last evening heard echoes of criticism, made a year earlier, of the standard of patrons’ dress in the members’ stand on race days at Riccarton. Mild shock waves were created last year when one observed he had seen someone wearing white gumboots. Mr John Austin, chairman of the club, said last evening that dress standards in the members’ stand had concerned his committee, and efforts

would be made to improve the situation. “We will make sure standards are raised,” Mr Austin said as he displayed one of a number of signs drawing attention to acceptable dress to be installed in the members’ stand. That done Mr Austin proceeded to place the glass-fronted sign on the floor behind him, only to let it slip from his grasp. The sign hit the floor with a bang and the sound of breaking glass.
