Minister of Police ‘vilifying’ groups

The Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, was attempting to “vilify” the Police Association and the Coalition of Concerned Citizens, said a coalition spokesman, Mr Gary Milne, in Christchurch yesterday. During a speech in New Plymouth on Wednesday, Mrs Hercus expressed disappointment with the association. She said that it had organised an antiLabour campaign and had become associated with the coalition “which has active National Party links.” “I am frankly beginning to believe the jokes’ about the Police Association being the National Party in uniform,” she said. The coalition has taken exception to Mrs Hercus’s comments.

"We are very concerned that the Minister seems to want to vilify thisSorganisation and the

Police Association by her description simply because we are concerned about the crime and violence in society and want to do something about it,” Mr Milne said. "Surely a Minister whose responsibility is to serve the Police Department should be as concerned as ordinary citizens to see that the debate on law and order is as wide-ranging as possible.” Mr Milne described the deployment of 50 more police to front-line duties as “just a joke.” New Zealand needed 1000 additional police to deal with the crime “rampaging through the community.” The coalition was continuing to organise a series of national public meetings on law and order. A forum would be held in Christchurch at the James Hay Theatre on Tuesday, August at 8 p.m. 4
