Tour team wins Chch encounters
The New Zealand Universities’ debating team, on a national tour of secondary schools, has won all three of its encounters in Christchurch. At Christchurch Girls’ High School on Wednesday the team decisively beat the University of Canterbury, arguing “that most games are not cricket.”
At Riccarton High School yesterday morning it beat a Canterbury provincial team, taking the negative on a motion “that we are the people our parents warned us against.”
The touring , team appeared at Shirley Boys’ High School yesterday afternoon to debate against teachers the motion “that David Lange should be canonised.”
Taking the negative, the universities’ team won on a close decision. The tour, which started in Dunedin on Monday, is intended to introduce debating to secondary school pupils.
The team flew to Palmerston North last evening to begin the tour’s North Island leg.
