Hospital staff interviewed
Four Christchurch detectives were in Ashburton yesterday interviewing hospital staff about the death of a woman who underwent minor surgery. The team, headed by Detective Senior-Sergeant Michael Muddiman, is looking into the death of a Rangiora woman, Nancy Ruther Hendrie, aged 53, who underwent surgery on a hand or arm on July 9.
Complications arose either during or after the surgery and Mrs Hendrie was transferred to Christchurch Hospital, where she died.
Detective Senior-Ser-geant Arthur Rodgers said the police investigating the matter had been given guidance by a medical expert. “They were interviewing staff and people connected with the hospital. Some of the staff have already been interviewed by the Ashburton police,” Detective Senior-Sergeant Rodgers said. “They were also having a look at the anaesthetic equipment to make sure it was functioning.”
He said the outcome of inquiries was unlikely to be known until next week.
