Police remove placards

PA Wellington Protesters booed and cheered as police took down banners and placards from the gates of the United States Embassy in Wellington last evening. About 150 delegates from the South Pacific Conference for Peace and Justice in Central America, held at Victoria University during the week-end, gathered at the embassy gates to protest against United States involvement in Central America. Placard-carrying protesters marched to the embassy in Fitzherbert Terrace, Thorndon, to round off the conference. The conference organiser, Mr Mike Browne, said the demonstration was an appropriate way to end the conference, which had discussed America’s role in the politics of Nicaragua and El Salvador. Members of the Coalition for Democracy in Fiji, a theatre troupe from the Phillippines, a Hotel and Hospital Workers’ Union spokesman, Mr Peter Cullen, and the Maori activist, Mrs Eva Rickard, spoke during the demonstration. Delegates from many parts of New Zealand attended the two-day conference.
