Christchurch keeps handy men’s squash lead

Christchurch maintained a handy lead in the Wilson Shield competition when it took maximum points against Burnside in the latest round of men’s open grade squash on Tuesday evening. Lancaster Park, the Blank Trophy-round winner, also had a clean sweep in a match against Ashburton and the gap between the two top teams remained at six points with two weeks of the competition remaining.

In other matches Linwood overcame a depleted High School Old Boys side in spite of John Knight’s surprise loss to Alan Lowe and Sumner also picked up eight points in its contest against Christchurch 11. The tall Christchurch lefthander, Ed Post, and the junior, Tristan Franklin

(Sumner), prolonged battle, Post scraping home, 10-8, in the fifth. The women’s open grade has spilt into two pools with three weeks of completition before final play-offs. Richmond W.M.C. and Marist were promoted to expand the competition to eight teams. Of merit was Sharyn Lane’s four-game win over Lorraine Cowan (Lancaster Park I) for Sumner.
