Miner hurt in roof collapse
Greymouth reporter A Strongman coalminer injured after a collapse of coal from the roof of his working place in the underground mine yesterday morning is reported in a stable condition in Grey Hospital. Mr Bruno Crestani, aged about 49, secretary of the Runanga State Miners’ Union, is believed to have broken ribs and internal injuries, after being struck on the back by the fall. Mr Crestani, with his partner, Mr Bob Naisbitt, was clearing the immediate area after drilling bore holes in preparation for shot-firing when the mishap occurred. Miners used their hands to uncover Mr Crestani who remained conscious in spite of being covered by two tonnes of coal. He was placed on a stretcher
and carried almost two kilometres from his workplace in the Five North section of the mine before being taken on a trolley for carrying to the surface. The accident occurred at 10.25 a.m. The workplace will remain closed until it can be checked by mines inspectors and workmen’s check inspectors this morning.
