Big number of North Island broodmares booked to Lordship

Kurahaupo Eden, winner of the 1985 DB Export Fillies’ Final in 1:58.9, heads a large number of North Island-based mares booked to the champion Templetonbased sire, Lordship, for the coming season. Bookings from the north are running at an unprecedented level for the stallion which has set records with his earnings as a broodmare sire in the last two seasons, topping $1 million in that field in the current term.

Globe Lodge studmaster, Barry Nyhan, believes this is a major

factor in northern mares accounting for more than a third of Lordship’s bookings so far, the total being over 30.

“Patronage has not always been as strong as that from the north. But the success of horses like Master Mood and Race Ruler, which are from Lordship mares, and particularly the success of Victoria Star has given the horse a lift. A few years ago many breeders preferred colts by him but now there is a big demand for his fillies,” Mr Nyhan said. Lordship is rising 29 years but is hale and

hearty. He has sired more than 350 individual winners and is the only New Zealand-bred and based sire to sire more than 300.

Other mares coming south include Waimauku Princess, which was retired recently, Betty Knight, Oroton, Berndon Star, Tuatahi Princess and Katie’s Star, a half-sister to Victoria Star which won the Meadowlands G.N. Oaks-DB Export Fillies’ Final double this season.

The popularity of Lordship with northern broodmare owners could well be a case of the “moun-

tain and Mohammed.” A number of popular stallions, including El Patron and Majestic Chance, have been shifted north this year to suit the needs of northern breeders and Vance Hanover has been shifted south for the convenience of South Island breeders. However, Lordship does not leave Globe Lodge these days under any circumstances. Passover, Up Tempo, Vienna Charm, Going Smooth and Armbro Play are among the South Island-based mares booked to the veteran stallion.
