A further example of National’s desperation and loss of direction was contained in its defence and foreign affairs policies, said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange. The policies ignored the key question of nuclear weapons in New Zealand, he said, in spite of Mr Bolger’s limp pronouncement that he did not want such weapons brought here. “True leadership requires the ability to make tough decisions. Is Mr Bolger for or against nuclear weapons in New Zealand?” Mr Lange said that National was proposing to tell nuclear Powers that their nuclear weapons were not wanted and trust them to comply.
