National policies

Sir,—The collapse of National’s traditional support base, evidenced by recent polls, especially the authoritative M.R.L. poll, is neither surprising nor transitory. There are two major determinants. One is an appreciation of the need for a firmly consistent application of current market-oriented economic policy. Only Labour can reliably supply this. The other is the realisation that National’s weakly led front bench is a recycled Muldoon team, with Sir Robert Muldoon still there himself. Such a team back in power in present circumstances would be a clear recipe for political and economic disaster. Erstwhile National supporters also know that National needs the purgative of another thumping electoral defeat to produce the revolution necessary for the “new guard” in the party to take over. It should, therefore, be obvious that electors in seats such as Rangiora and Fendalton have every reason to go Labour in next month’s General Election. — Yours, etc., DENIS O’ROURKE. July 7, 1987.
