Charitable status
Sir, — Thank you for your article (July 4) reporting the cynical disregard shown by certain organisations for the terms and conditions attached to their “charitable” status. These and others often claim to be working for “peace”, but at a time when the real threat of nuclear war was never less they use fear of it to wage political warfare against the Western democracies, with New Zealand as the first victim. It is worth quoting from last year’s Defence Committee report: “Some have argued that the peace movement in New Zealand is subversive. We have also been assured that the great majority (by implication, not all) are patriotic New Zealanders with no intention to provide solace or support to the Soviet Union. Whether a consequence of some of their actions is to bring about this result is, however, a matter for legitimate debate.” Good intentions alone do not guarantee the intended results. — Yours, etc.,
J. S. PALLOT, July 6, 1987.
