Addresses incorrectly given

Many women having abortions at Canterbury Hospital Board facilities give false addresses, said the report. In the section dealing with the board’s abortion services, the report said that anecdotal evidence suggested that an unknown but probably significant proportion of patients gave false information about their place of residence.

The bulk of the board’s abortion service was transferred to Lyndhurst Hospital in January, 1986. In the first year, 804 terminations were done at the hospital compared with 175 at Christchurch Women’s Hospital in the same period, said the report.

The report said that the board should evaluate the service regularly because changing social patterns were likely to have an impact on the demand for, and public expectation of, the service.
