Marlborough form could prove key to T.A.B. double outcome

A race run on a rain-affected track at the Marlborough meeting on May 5 could be the key to the outcome of the Canterbury Handicap, first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double at Riccarton tomorrow.

When they met at level weights, at 2025 m at Waterlea, Charlie’s Pal found it easy to contribute the top side of the quinella, beating Vendee by two and a half lengths. Unless there is freakish drying weather by tomorrow conditions should be little different from those Charlie’s Pal capitalised on at Waterlea. Vendee’s three starts in the,meantime have yielded a win and two seconds, a line-up of form that could make her favourite tomorrow. But the durable Charlie’s Pal, in the hands of an in-form Riccarton jockey, John Dowling, should, with an advantage of one kilo, give his younger rival lots to do at the end of 1800 metres.

They present themselves as a likely pair for the quinella, and will, or should, figure largely in most endeavours to land the T.A.B. trifecta.

Vendee is closest in the weights to Wingatui’s Courier Flight, which won the Great Autumn on his last campaign at Riccarton, but with better footing than will be on offer tomorrow.

has done nothing of any account this time up. He managed a placed run on a soft track at Levin last August, but his two wins later before he was put aside were on firm footing. Wentworth Heights, a five-year-old from Gore, will probably make the change to a winter track better than most of the others in this field. He won on a heavy track at the last Grand National meeting and won in style on soft footing over 1600 m at Oamaru in May. Dester showed something of a talent on rain-affected tracks in the North Island last season, and has also done enough since he joined the Pitman stable at Riccarton to give him entry to the list of fancies for the June Handicap, second leg of tomorrow’s T.A.B. double. The four-year-old son of Smuggler appeared to be unlucky when second behind Noble Pal at Oamaru two starts back, and followed up with a battling third behind .Noble Lyric at Ashburton on Tuesday. Noble Lyric and Noble Pal will be in the line-up again tomorrow, but both have to give weight to Dester. Uncle Louie widens the range of interest in the race. A Noble Bijou gelding from the Neil Ridley stable in Southland, Uncle Louie proved a class above his rivals on a heavy track in the corresponding race at the Eastern Southland Hunt meeting on June 9.
