Sir Zeus leading prospect

Special correspondent Auckland One of the more promising three-year-olds last spring, then disappointing for a time, Sir Zeus is back in the form that makes him a leading prospect for the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Rotorua Racing Club’s meeting at Rotorua today.

From the Adams and Wheeler stable at New Plymouth, Sir Zeus ran second in both the Wellington Guineas and the Winstone Guineas. While a winner at Trentham in December, in Class Three, he failed through the summer and autumn to fulfil early expectations. Perhaps he needs soft ground, which is suggested by his run in the latest of his four starts since he came back from a spell. Over 2060 m, at Wanganui on June 1, he managed a creditable second placing, on a heavy track and in Class One. This time Sir Zeus will be running 1900 m in Class Two. He could be tested, though, by Call Me Kiwi, a free-going five-year-old gelding from the in-form Priscott stable at Te Awamutu.

Call Me Kiwi is a generous galloper when in front as he showed the time before last when second over 2200 m on the first day of the Great Northern carnival and might be excused a last-start failure, at Pukekohe last Saturday.

Broadway Bill, on form at the Great Northern meeting, should win the second leg of the T.A.B. double. He was a close second, promoted to first, over 1400 m at his last start, a continuation of some solid form. He looks nicely placed z in today’s weight-for-age event.
